As the economic landscape continues to evolve, Arizona is positioning itself as a burgeoning hub for medical manufacturing. State leaders are banking on health care to boost and diversify Arizona's financial prospects, pairing it with the state's already solid semiconductor sector. Notable is the push towards developing the Phoenix market into a hotbed for manufacturing, research, and development, as well as innovation within the medical field.
This strategic move is evident from the substantial investments pouring into the Phoenix area, with projects like the Discovery Oasis campus in north Phoenix acting as beacons to companies globally. As cited by ABC15, the existing bioscience corridors and the Diamondbacks playing the long game demonstrate the region's commitment to this industry.
Moreover, the focus on medical technology is exemplified by statements from Steven Lester, the medical director for Discovery Oasis. "We think that the future of healthcare is going to be through strategic, complementary partnerships," Lester told the Phoenix Business Journal. His comments underscore the anticipation of cutting-edge advancements such as regenerative medicine and bio-printing.
As part of the movement towards a collaborative space, John Grady of Wexford Science & Technology emphasized the role of proximity, density, and walkability among facilities. "It all happens jammed up against each other, so those collisions will drive new discoveries," Grady explained, illustrating the dynamic nature of the sector, and how a conducive environment can catalyze innovation.
Pivotal to the expansion of lab space is also legislative support. A notable piece of legislation, Senate Bill 1539, aims to increase tax incentives for industries, including life sciences and medical devices—sectors not previously covered as extensively as semiconductors. "We would like to see that extended to life science, biotech, medical devices," Lester shared hopes for the bill, signaling a potential uplift for the state's medical manufacturing domain.
With the convergence of industry, innovation, and policy, Arizona anticipates that medical manufacturing will play a significant role in its economic future. This sentiment was shared by Lester who believes, "the next economic frontier for this state is going to be in medical manufacturing."
